Back in the 1940’s, Sam Gordon was a milkman in Brooklyn, delivering dairy products for Grand View Dairy Company. A well-liked and respected member of the community, Sam could always be counted on to help his neighbors.
Using his resources, his truck and his two sons, Sam began moving furniture for friends and neighbors. Recognizing the need for this kind of service, Sam started Big G Trucking (which has subsequently gone through several name changes). With the growth of the suburbs, Big G began moving residential customers out of, and around the city. And a full-service household moving company was born.
The fleet grew and, by the mid-50’s, Big G began delivering furniture for department stores like Macy’s, Gimbel’s and Bloomingdale’s. In 1986, the A-1 First Class brand originated, and the company has been known by this name ever since.
A-1 has grown from one truck back in the 40’s to a fleet of top-of-the-line vehicles and numerous warehouse locations. In addition to our local and long distance residential moves, A-1 First Class now moves businesses with the same commitment to customer satisfaction with which we serve our residential customers. We also offer full-service document storage and management programs, full-service warehouse storage and self-storage.
In March of 2004, A-1 First Class acquired Viking Moving & Storage. We were also designated an interstate agent for Atlas Van Lines, as a result of growing customer demand for long-distance residential and commercial relocations. Now officially known as A-1 First Class - Viking Moving & Storage, the company executes local, intrastate and interstate moves, including to Canada and Europe, and offers a wide variety of commercial and personal storage solutions.
Four generations after Sam Gordon, grandfather of the company’s President Michael Laby, started helping people out with his truck and his sons, A-1 First Class – Viking Moving & Storage is still doing what we were founded to do: helping our neighbors move.
