10 International Relocation Tips

1.    Have a garage sale – Sell the things you don’t need in a garage sale. It will lighten your load and you can make some extra dough in the process.

2.    Shut off utilities the day after loading – You’ll most likely need electricity and water during your move, so plan to shut off your utilities the day after loading.

3.    Schedule your travel plans for the day after loading – Because the loading day can be hectic and problems can arise, schedule your travel plans for the following day. You don’t want to miss your flight, so always plan ahead.

4.    Leave the packing to the professionals – Because of the long journey your belongings are going to take during your international move, you will want to leave the packing of important and fragile items to the professionals.

5.    Be ready for the movers – To make the move go quickly and smoothly, be ready for the movers. Do the laundry and the dishes and pack your suitcases, make sure everything is set to go on the day of loading.

6.    Contact your country’s embassy – Make sure everyone in your family has the proper identification and documents they need for your international move – i.e. visas, passports, etc.

7.    Set aside items you will be keeping with you – Make sure the movers don’t pack items you will be bringing with you. Place these items in a box or suitcase and label it clearly – “Do not pack.”

8.    Make a diagram for where your furniture will be placed – Once you arrive at your new home, make a diagram for where you want your furniture placed so that the movers can expedite the process and get you settled as quickly as possible.

9.    Prepare and “Unload First Box” – You’ll want to pack an “Unload First Box” with essentials that you will need for your first night in your new home. Pack things such toiletries, paper plates and utensils.

10.    Put items you don’t need in storage – If your international move is temporary, place items you wont need in storage until you return. This will save you the hassle of packing and unpacking unnecessary items.
