Whether you’ve got toddlers, school-aged children or pre-teens, you’ll want to plan several kids activities to keep your children busy during your local or long distance moving to make sure things go smoothly. This is the time to get creative! If you’re kids are old enough, get them involved. If they’re a little younger, try to keep them occupied and out of all the chaos. Take a look at some ideas we’ve come up with.
Kids Activities – During the Moving Process
Packing and unpacking can be a time consuming process. Try getting your kids involved by making it a game. It just might be fun and help move the process along.
1. Watch the pets – If you have pets, they’ll need to be taken care of on moving day. If your kids are old enough, they can take the family dog for a long walk or make sure he has plenty of food and water throughout the day.
2. Garbage patrol – There will be tons of garbage on the big day. Set your kids up with some large garbage bags and have them patrol the house for packing paper and boxes to pick up.
3. Assemble boxes – While you pack, have your kids help you assemble boxes.
4. Play the DJ – Everybody loves to listen to music while they work, so set your kids up as the DJ. They can change the songs every few minutes, which will keep them occupied for a long time!
5. Make packing a game – Making packing fun by turning it into a scavenger hunt. Give your kids a list of items and a box that they need to fill. Whoever gets all the items on their list first is the winner!
Kids Activities – On the Road or in the Air
Whether you’re driving to your new home or flying across the country, you’ll want to plan kids activities to keep your children happy and content during your trip. Here are some ideas we came up with.
1. Pack a survival kit – Pack snacks, toys, DVDs, CDs, books on tape in a survival kit. Have plenty of options for your kids so they don’t get too antsy in the back seat.
2. High-tech fun –If you’re driving cross-country, have your kids take photos of state signs as you pass by, or stop and take a family photo along the way. Of course, you can always set your kids up with a movie on a portable DVD player to keep them occupied for a couple of hours.
3. Old school games – Who doesn’t love a good old’ fashioned game of Alphabet, or the License Plate Game? These games can be fun and educational too!
4. Surprise presents – Before the trip wrap a few surprise presents to reward your kids for being good. Wrapping the toys a few times will take them longer to open them, and they’ll be excited to have a new toy to play with during the trip!
5. Baking sheet – Give each of your kids a baking sheet as a playing surface for toy cars or coloring books, it will keep them more contained and will keep you from having to retrieve dropped toys in cramped courters.
