Tips for Moving with Animals

May 15th, 2010 by admin

If you are a pet owner preparing to move to a new home, you will have to do a bit of research. Certain localities may have strict requirements or restrictions regarding pet ownership. You may need permits or registrations.

•    Remember to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian before moving with animals. Your pet should have an examination before moving. Be sure to secure your pet’s medical records so that they can be forwarded to your new veterinarian.

Moving with Small Pets: Short Distances

•    For local moves, it may be best to transport your pet in the car with you on moving day.
•    Do not forget to make sure that your pet is safe. Keep your pet in an unused room, or perhaps even outside. And of course, as always, your pet should have plenty of potable water, and playthings to keep them occupied.

Moving with Small Pets: By Car

•    Most dogs and cats get carsick. You will have to be prepared to make many stops along the way. Moving with small pets such as hamsters, Guinea pigs, and birds is easily done by transporting them with you in your car. A simple way of keeping them calm and quiet is to cover their cage with a cloth.
•   Long distance moves may require an overnight stop. Remember to call hotels in advance to make sure that they will allow pets.

Moving with Animals: Fish

•    It’s advisable to visit your local aquarium or pet shop and get special containers designed to safely transport fish.

Preparing a “Pet Pack”

If you’re transporting your pet by car, there are many things you should plan on taking with you on moving day:

•    An old bed sheet or blanket to protect your car upholstery.
•    One or two of its favorite toys.
•    A plastic container of potable water.
•    A plastic container of food and treats.
•    Medications your pet may need.
•    A leash for when you make rest stops.
•    Paper towels, a sponge, and plenty of plastic bags in case your pet becomes carsick.
