Best Animal Rescues

Brooklyn LOVES animals. Seriously – it might be the most animal-friendly nugget of the universe.

Brooklynites take the well-being of their four-legged family members very, very seriously, so it’s no surprise that this borough is dotted with animal rescues dedicated to the betterment and love of our furry-friends.

Here are some of our favorites.

Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition – Williamsburg

A no-kill shelter on the north side of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) is dedicated to providing a safe haven to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned animals. Volunteers commit their time to walk rescue dogs (or play with the cats!) in order to provide them with the love, sociability and quality of life that they need before they find their forever home.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue – Kensington

Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR), a no-kill non-profit organization, has been specializing in the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of dogs, cats, reptiles, birds and small mammals throughout the NYC area since 1998. SCAR is committed to staying focused on rescuing animals with difficult medical conditions, taking in and saving the lives of the animals that many other rescues cannot.

Brooklyn Animal Action – Park Slope

Brooklyn Animal Action (BAA) is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the well-being of the animal community as a whole. With continuous outreach and education programs, BAA is committed to spreading the knowledge of animal welfare around the NYC area. They’ve found permanent homes for over 2,000 cats (and some dogs too!) as well as have Trapped-Neutered-Released hundreds more.

Sugar Mutts Rescue – Bushwick

Sugar Mutts Rescue is a non-profit rescue dedicated to finding forever homes for the furry friends they rescue from city kill lists and shelters. Although they do have a soft spot for rescuing and rehoming the most discriminated against dog breeds, Sugar Mutts rescues all different breeds and all different ages! With an open no-cage daycare and boarding facility on site, Sugar Mutts will stay in your family for a long time!
